Her Story

About Melanie

Melanie B. Lampa serves as a Revenue Cycle Analyst at R1 RCM, a consulting organization specializing in healthcare finance and revenue cycle management. In her role, she focuses on researching underpaid accounts, refining and analyzing data, and developing well-supported appeals to insurance companies to help healthcare providers recover appropriate reimbursement. Her work not only contributes to the financial sustainability of hospitals but also supports efforts to reduce unnecessary medical debt and promote greater fairness and transparency for patients navigating the healthcare system.

Lampa’s interest in healthcare was shaped by personal experiences and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration/Management and Finance from Loyola University Chicago, following her education at Lane Tech College Preparatory High School. Her professional journey began with healthcare operations experience in a hospital setting, where she developed a strong foundation in the complexities of healthcare administration and reimbursement. Motivated by seeing her mother, a NICU nurse, navigate the healthcare system while supporting her father through chronic illnesses, Lampa became particularly passionate about helping patients better understand their insurance rights and advocating for greater fairness within the healthcare system.

Throughout her career, Lampa has distinguished herself through analytical excellence, leadership, and a commitment to service. In a single month in May, she helped recover more than $1 million in revenue for three clients, demonstrating her ability to turn detailed data analysis into meaningful financial results. She also received an Outstanding Leadership Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago and earned first place in a university case competition for developing a financial model for an oncology clinic. Lampa attributes her success to her faith in God, the strong support system she has built, and her commitment to continuous growth. She encourages young women entering the healthcare industry to remain flexible and adaptable as policies evolve while confidently establishing firm boundaries and leading with professionalism, kindness, and respect.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melanie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith in God, which has guided me throughout my journey and provided a strong foundation for both my personal and professional growth. I also recognize the importance of having a strong support system and intentionally building meaningful relationships with people who encourage, inspire, and support me. Their guidance, encouragement, and belief in me have played an invaluable role in helping me overcome challenges, remain focused on my goals, and continue moving forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is that knowledge is one thing no one can take away from you. Material possessions such as a home, a car, or other belongings can be lost, but the knowledge, skills, experiences, and wisdom you develop throughout your life remain with you. I believe in continually investing in myself through learning and personal growth because the knowledge I gain strengthens my confidence, expands my opportunities, and provides a foundation I can carry with me throughout every stage of my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to embrace flexibility and remain adaptable, particularly as policies, regulations, and industry practices continue to evolve. I also encourage women to establish clear boundaries and have the confidence to stand firm in their decisions while maintaining professionalism, kindness, and respect. You can be strong, assertive, and confident while still leading with empathy and treating others with grace.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I believe artificial intelligence is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today, as it continues to transform how we work and interact with technology. At the same time, I see a valuable opportunity for professionals to strengthen the qualities that technology cannot easily replace, particularly strong leadership, communication, relationship-building, and people skills. Developing these skills, while remaining adaptable and open to technological change, will continue to be essential for long-term success and career growth.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are community, connection, and family. I believe in creating a strong support system and fostering meaningful relationships with the people around me. For me, something as simple as cooking and sharing family dinners can bring people together, create a sense of belonging, and strengthen those connections. I strive to carry that same spirit of compassion, support, and community into both my personal life and my professional relationships.
