Her Story
About Melanie
Before I worked at my current job, I was at a place called Totally Bamboo, where they sold bamboo cutting boards and things like that, and I got to do a lot of their marketing on the email side, writing blog posts, a little bit of everything. That's where I really kind of discovered my love for writing, and that's what led me into this position that I'm in now with Access. Originally, it started out with just a similar role, Marketing Specialist role, and throughout my time here, it's evolved into more focusing on that content side. I started out mostly focusing on just email marketing, and specifically the writing and actually creating those emails. It's just kind of expanded from there into our blog on this side, ebooks, anything that's content-related, I kind of have a little bit of a hand in now. Microsoft Word is my best friend - that's always normally open on my computer. A lot of my day involves email creation, writing or reviewing blogs, supporting on our webinar programs. I really like how everything kind of fits together, so I work with a few other people on our marketing team to create supporting pieces of content. If we have a new e-book launch, or a topic for a webinar that's really powerful, we'll try to create supporting pieces of content related to those, so rather than things just feeling like a one-off random piece of content, it's kind of more of an overarching campaign where things are linked together. There's the social side, email promotions, so people can digest the content in various ways - if they want to attend the webinar, they can, if they want to read about that topic, they can. It's just presenting information in various ways and formats.

Ten minutes with Melanie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think it's just something that happens over time. There wasn't any one defining factor or thing that I did, it's just a bunch of smaller things over the years that all add up, kind of like a snowball effect, I guess.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
This was a piece of advice that I had gotten from a co-worker at Verizon shortly after I had started there. My co-worker had said to me to take advantage of all of the things that the company has to offer. That was the tuition reimbursement, any other programs that we had - don't feel bad about it. If you have time off, take your time off. It's there for you. That's a piece of advice that I got that I was like, okay, yes, I should be using these things.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I'm gonna say, don't be afraid to stand out. I think there's a lot of times where, especially when you're younger, just getting started in your career, people tend to be a little bit more on the shy side, almost. And I think that if you have a skill, or you're good at something, don't be afraid to show off the good work that you've done. I think that makes a big difference. On the team that I'm on right now, we have a weekly call where we all get together and kind of chat about what we've been working on and that sort of thing, and that's the time where if I have some really good email results or whatnot that I want to share, I'll take a moment to do it on that call, for example. Just demonstrate the impact of the work that you're doing.
