Melanie Mendoza is a healthcare professional specializing in medical billing, auditing, and pharmacy account management. She currently serves as a Senior Billing Specialist at Elevance Health, where she applies her expertise in reviewing patient accounts, verifying insurance responsibilities, reconciling payments, and resolving billing discrepancies. With a strong background in healthcare operations, she plays an important role in ensuring accurate financial processes and supporting quality patient care. Before joining Elevance Health, Melanie gained valuable experience as a Medical Billing Specialist at PHCA Medical Group, where she developed her knowledge of health insurance, ICD-10 coding, collections, and reimbursement processes. She also did Customer Service and scheduling for patients. Her earlier career includes customer service, tracking and tracing and working directly with customs at
DHL Express, as well as several years in hospitality roles at resorts in Puerto Rico, where she built strong communication, problem-solving, and service skills. These diverse experiences have helped her develop adaptability and a customer-focused approach in every role she takes on. Melanie was born and raised in PR and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, graduating Cum Laude. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my resilience, strong work ethic, and willingness to adapt. I’ve learned to stay committed to my goals while balancing different responsibilities, and I’m always looking for opportunities to grow, improve, and become better than I was yesterday
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to never stop learning, take opportunities even when I feel unprepared, and stay open to growth. Building strong skills, maintaining good relationships, and believing in my abilities can help me create a successful and fulfilling career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to younger women is to believe in yourself, even when you’re still figuring things out. Don’t be afraid to speak up, take chances, and go after opportunities that challenge you. Know your worth, trust your journey, and remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out to be successful. Be confident in who you are and never be afraid to make your own path.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in RCM are changing regulations, payer requirements, technology, and increasing competition for roles. At the same time, these changes create opportunities to stand out by developing strong technical skills and using automation and AI to improve efficiency and accuracy.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are integrity, hard work, family, and growth. At work, I value being dependable, respectful, and always willing to learn. In my personal life, I value family, balance, and being present for the people who matter most.

Values and Perspective on Success
I believe success is not defined by one accomplishment, one job title, or one moment. For me, success is an ongoing journey built through hard work, resilience, growth, ambition, and staying true to the values that matter most to me. My career and personal life have both shaped the woman I am today, and each experience has taught me something about who I want to be and where I want to go next.
I work in Revenue Cycle Management, a field that requires attention to detail, problem-solving, adaptability, and a willingness to continuously learn. Healthcare is constantly changing, and so is the RCM industry. Changes in regulations, payer requirements, technology, automation, and artificial intelligence continue to shape the way we work. At the same time, there is increasing competition for roles, which makes it more important than ever to continue developing your skills and finding ways to stand out.
I see these challenges as opportunities. Technology and AI are changing the industry, but I believe there will always be a need for human knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and experience. The future of RCM is about finding the right balance between technology and human expertise. Those who are willing to learn, adapt, and embrace change will have opportunities to grow with the industry.
At work, I value being dependable, respectful, accountable, and always willing to learn. I want to be someone others can trust to get the job done and approach challenges with a positive mindset. I also believe creativity is important in the workplace. Thinking outside the box, looking at problems from different perspectives, and bringing your own ideas to the table can make a meaningful difference.
Ambition is another important part of who I am. I don't want to simply stay comfortable; I want to continue challenging myself and creating opportunities for growth. I believe in setting goals, working toward them, and being willing to step outside of my comfort zone. I have learned that you don't have to feel completely ready before taking the next step. Sometimes, you have to take the opportunity, learn along the way, and grow into it.
I attribute my success largely to my resilience, strong work ethic, and willingness to keep learning. Life has taught me that things don't always go according to plan, but setbacks don't have to define you. What matters is how you respond, how you learn from your experiences, and whether you continue moving forward. I have learned to trust myself, recognize my strengths, and believe that I am capable of more than I sometimes realize.
One of the most important lessons I've learned professionally is the importance of making yourself valuable rather than simply staying busy. Building strong skills, understanding the work you do, staying current with changes in your industry, and being someone others can depend on can make a lasting difference in your career. I also believe in keeping track of your accomplishments and recognizing your own growth. Sometimes, we are so focused on the next goal that we forget to appreciate how far we have already come.
For me, career success is also about building a life that works for me. I believe it is possible to be ambitious while still valuing balance. I want to work hard, grow professionally, and pursue my goals, but I also want to be present for the people I love and enjoy the life I am building.
Family is at the heart of my personal life and one of my greatest motivations. Becoming a mom has given me an even stronger sense of purpose and has made me think differently about what success means to me. I want to build a future that I can be proud of while also being present for the important moments along the way. I have learned that professional accomplishments are meaningful, but so are the memories, relationships, and experiences that happen outside of work.
Being a mother, a professional, and an individual with my own goals has taught me the importance of balance. I don't believe that becoming successful means sacrificing everything else that matters. Instead, I want to continue finding a balance between my career, my family, my personal growth, and the things that make me who I am.
Creativity is also an important part of my personality. I enjoy expressing myself, celebrating milestones, creating memorable experiences, and putting my own personal touch into the things I do. I believe creativity isn't limited to artistic pursuits—it is also about how you approach life, solve problems, communicate with others, and find ways to make something your own.
My personal identity is another part of what makes me who I am. I am proud of my Puerto Rican roots, having been born and raised in Puerto Rico, and I enjoy the little things that allow me to express my personality. I believe you can be professional and ambitious while still being authentic and allowing your personality to shine through. You don't have to leave parts of yourself behind to succeed.
One of the biggest pieces of career advice I have learned is not to wait until you feel completely ready. If an opportunity challenges you, that may be exactly why you should consider taking it. Growth often happens when you step outside of your comfort zone. I also believe in building relationships, protecting your reputation, continuing to learn, and understanding your own worth.
Don't let fear of failure prevent you from pursuing opportunities. Ask questions. Learn from the people around you. Take chances. Know your worth. You don't need to have your entire career mapped out to be successful.
Most importantly, don't compare your journey to someone else's. Everyone's path looks different. Success doesn't happen at the same time or in the same way for everyone. What matters is continuing to move forward, learning from your experiences, and creating a path that is meaningful to you.
I also believe that women should feel empowered to create their own definition of success. For some, success may mean reaching a leadership position. For others, it may mean financial independence, flexibility, building a family, pursuing a passion, or simply having a career that provides a fulfilling life. There is no single definition.
Looking ahead, I want to continue growing both personally and professionally. I want to keep developing my skills, embrace new technology, challenge myself with new opportunities, and continue building a career I am proud of. At the same time, I want to remain present for my family and make sure that my ambition never takes away from the life I am working so hard to create.
Ultimately, I believe my journey is about becoming the best version of myself while staying true to who I am. I am proud of how far I have come, but I also know that I am not finished growing. There are still goals I want to accomplish, challenges I want to overcome, and opportunities I want to pursue.
Success, to me, is not about having a perfect career or a perfect life. It is about resilience when things don't go as planned, courage when new opportunities appear, humility to keep learning, ambition to keep moving forward, creativity to find my own path, and gratitude for the people and experiences that have helped shape me.
Most importantly, it is about building a life that I can be proud of—not just professionally, but personally. A life where I can be ambitious, creative, successful, present for my family, and still completely myself.
The Experiences That Shaped Me
A significant part of who I am today comes from experiencing loss at a young age. My father passed away when I was fifteen, and that experience forced me to grow up and mature earlier than I expected. In many ways, I had to understand responsibility, strength, and life differently than someone my age normally would.
Losing a parent at such a young age was difficult, but it also shaped the person I became. It taught me resilience and gave me a perspective on life that I carry with me today. I learned early that life can change unexpectedly and that sometimes you have to find strength even when you don't feel ready for what you're facing.
Growing up sooner than expected helped me become independent, responsible, and determined. It taught me not to take the people and opportunities in my life for granted and gave me a deeper appreciation for family. It also contributed to the ambition I have today. I learned that I wanted to build a life I could be proud of and create a future that reflected the person I wanted to become.
Looking back, I don't believe that experience defines me, but it certainly helped shape me. The resilience I developed at a young age has carried into my career, my relationships, my role as a mother, and the way I approach challenges. It taught me that even when life forces you to grow before you're ready, those experiences can become part of the strength you carry with you for the rest of your life.
