Her Story

About Melanie

I have been an executive assistant for 24 years, beginning my career in the Philippines where I provided support to two country managing directors, a chairman, and a CEO. When I moved to the United States, I worked briefly as an executive assistant for Cyber County Government supporting the finance and budget director, then as an administrative assistant at Fresenius Kidney Care Center. Currently, I work at Maryland Department of Transportation as an administrative assistant. I am also a registered nurse in the Philippines. In my current role at MDOT, a typical day involves handling calls from citizens who report problems regarding state highway, such as traffic, road closures, potholes, and drainage problems. We make sure these are all taken care of, especially during recent winter events when there were lots of citizens calling for reports on plowing and roadside assistance. I also process invoices for our contractors who help us with snow and ice problems, making sure they get paid and that reports from citizens are properly coordinated to the proper channels so these problems can be addressed. My main areas of expertise include calendar management, PowerPoint presentations, purchasing, and project management, providing high-level executive administrative support to top management. My most notable professional achievement so far has been learning the process of invoice processing and coordination with contractors during big winter storms. Even though I have been with MDOT for just a little over 6 months, I was able to help the office manager coordinate everything during a huge winter event. Being able to adopt, adjust, and learn the process in such a short period of time was a big achievement for me.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being a hard worker and being able to be open to changes and new learning that can help you grow.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received from my managers during my 20 years working with top-level management is that when you work on something, you just don't work on it with the skills that you have, but at the same time, you also have to work with heart, because that alone motivates you to give your best to it. Apart from that, you have to be able to plan ahead of time and know what's going on so you would be able to perform the task that is expected of you, especially when you're given a special project. You have to work and give your best even if you're being pressed with time. I think that's one of the best things that I have learned, to be able to finish the projects even if under pressure, because I saw how they work and how they manage people and how they manage projects that were assigned to them. Being able to be exposed to how they work and how they manage people and projects, I got it from them. I think that, for me, was the best.
