About Melanie

Melanie Coates is an instructor, educator, and fitness professional with a passion for helping others understand the connection between movement, health, and quality of life. She holds a Master of Science in Health and Wellness Management from the University of Cincinnati, received in 2025. Her professional journey began with a love for fitness inspired by dance, leading to her bachelor's degree and subsequent roles starting in 2023 as a coach at Kidstrong teaching fundamentals to kids. She has taught as an adjunct instructor for one year during her graduate studies and an additional year at the University of Cincinnati, as well as at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, covering topics including first aid and introduction to health occupations for high school and college students. Melanie is a personal trainer certified through the NSCA and serves as a coach at Orange Theory while also working as a substitute group fitness instructor and dance studio coach. Her approach emphasizes baseline strength and conditioning for young athletes, teaching students about exercise and health fundamentals, and supporting geriatrics with balance, longevity, and conditions such as arthritis. Outside her professional roles, she enjoys hiking, rock climbing, and fishing, bringing her enthusiasm for movement into her work to help clients and students build confidence and lead healthier lives.

Ten minutes with Melanie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think the key for me to finding success is finding the personal connection to whatever field you're working for. So for me, the why had to be applicable to me as well. What is the importance of longevity to me? What is the importance of preventing injury for me? And then, if it has meaning to you, you can help it have meaning for other people.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

It comes back to don't be afraid to be a trailblazer to do your own thing. I never thought that I would want to teach, and I never thought I would own my own personal training company... But the advice to just go ahead and do it led to so much success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Sometimes you have to do the dirty work to get where you want to be. You'll have to do the things that you don't want to, meaning maybe you're not going to get paid as much as you want to, or maybe you're going to have to do a lot of different jobs in order to get the experience to be where you want to be. And that is okay. Doing the work and learning is going to help you later on in life.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I see a tremendous opportunity for work-life balance and flexibility in the health and wellness industry. There are so many different career paths available, from personal training and wellness coaching to working in schools, gyms, and other settings. This variety allows people to find a role that aligns with their interests while creating a career that fits their lifestyle.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Professionally, humility is key for me. There is always something to learn from others, and keeping an open mind prevents you from getting set in your ways. Personally, kindness and real human connection go a long way. Building those genuine, friendly relationships is what helps you truly resonate with students and clients.
