About Melanie

Melanie Welcher is a healthcare supply chain and pharmacy procurement leader with more than 23 years of experience in pharmacy operations, sourcing, and strategic procurement. She began her healthcare career as a veterinary technician before transitioning into human healthcare, earning her Certified Pharmacy Technician credential and starting as a pharmacy technician in 2003. Through dedication and continuous professional growth, she advanced into hospital purchasing, pharmacy procurement, and leadership roles, ultimately becoming Director, Pharmacy Procurement & Logistics at Sutter Health. Throughout her career, Melanie has specialized in pharmacy supply chain management, strategic sourcing, drug shortage mitigation, inventory optimization, and 340B program development. She helped establish Sutter Health's 340B program in 2015 before transitioning into sourcing and procurement leadership, where she oversees contracting, pharmaceutical resiliency, inventory management, risk mitigation, and cost optimization across the pharmacy service line. Among her proudest professional accomplishments is her leadership with the End Drug Shortage Alliance (EDSA), where she contributes to national efforts to reduce life-saving medication shortages and improve pharmaceutical resiliency across the healthcare system. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Melanie is deeply committed to serving her community. She serves as Director of the California Cowgirls nonprofit equestrian drill team, supports veterans and young adults through equine programs, volunteers in wildlife rehabilitation, participates in 4-H and FFA activities, and provides animal-assisted therapy through Lily, one of California's few certified miniature therapy horses permitted in healthcare facilities. Known for her coaching leadership style, Melanie is passionate about developing others, solving complex challenges, and creating meaningful solutions that improve both patient care and healthcare operations.

Ten minutes with Melanie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my tenacity and my willingness to identify gaps, develop practical solutions, and confidently lead others toward implementing them. I believe in tackling challenges head-on, continuously improving processes, and never being afraid to create a better way forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to never become discouraged and to remember that I am worth far more than the opinions or limitations others may place on me. Believing in my own value has helped me continue growing throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women to remain persistent because you will hear "no" many times throughout your career. You only need one person to say "yes." Whenever you encounter rejection, ask why, learn from the feedback, improve where needed, and continue pursuing your goals with confidence and determination.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I believe the greatest opportunity in healthcare pharmacy supply chain today is improving accurate and timely communication. Strong communication enables organizations to respond more effectively to medication shortages, improve collaboration across stakeholders, and strengthen patient care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Trust and communication are the foundation of everything I do. I believe strong relationships, honest communication, and mutual trust are essential for building successful teams, solving complex problems, and making a meaningful impact both professionally and personally.
