Her Story

About Melinda

Melinda Hall serves as a Service Coordinator for a fire and security company in Louisville, Kentucky. In her role, she manages the scheduling of technicians who perform fire alarm inspections, sprinkler inspections, backflow testing, and hydrant services throughout the community. Hall brings about 20 years of experience in the field to her position, which she has held for five weeks at her current company. Prior to entering the industry, she attended cosmetology school after high school and worked as a hairdresser for 17 years until an injury left her temporarily paralyzed. Through determination, she regained the use of her arm and chose not to pursue disability, instead building a new career path. Hall attributes her success to her stubbornness, hard-headed determination, and faith in God. She values respect, humility, transparency, honesty, and trust above all, and advises young women entering the male-dominant field to hold their own, avoid taking things personally, stay true to themselves, and not compromise their values.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melinda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I'm stubborn. I don't give up. I'm hard-headed. I keep pushing myself through. I like the job. I like what I do. And I am very just I'm determined. All the things that I have gotten through and gone through, that's all God.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You can only do what you can. You're only one person. You have to be very adaptable because the job is very busy and hectic and never-ending.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You gotta hold your own. You have to remember you don't take anything personal. Stay true to yourself. Don't lose yourself. If something doesn't feel right then you don't do it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is accepting how things are in a rough, male-dominant field with language and behaviors I no longer engage in. I have to put on blinders and pretend earbuds. It's hard because I no longer talk or act that way.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Respect, humility, transparency, honesty, trust. My biggest value is God. Values change when walking the path I'm on.
