Her Story

About Melissa

Melissa Aguilar is a healthcare professional, hospice advocate, and community leader with nearly 20 years of experience dedicated to improving the lives of patients and their families. As a Senior Account Executive with LHC Group, she combines her clinical and business development expertise to educate patients, families, and healthcare professionals about compassionate, patient-centered hospice care. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Melissa is passionate about ensuring individuals have the knowledge, resources, and support to make informed healthcare decisions while preserving dignity, comfort, and quality of life.

Melissa began her healthcare career at St. Luke’s Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in the PACU and Surgical Observation Unit before moving to Houston Methodist Hospital, working in the Emergency department and later in Care Transitions, where she helped improve the patient experience by connecting individuals and families with the education, community resources, and coordinated care they needed to successfully transition beyond the hospital. This experience reinforced her belief that exceptional healthcare extends far beyond treating a diagnosis; it means caring for the whole person. Inspired by her father’s hospice journey, she joined the very organization that cared for him, turning a deeply personal experience into a lifelong mission of service.

Today, Melissa leads healthcare partnerships throughout the community, collaborates with providers, supports families through difficult healthcare decisions, and advocates for compassionate end-of-life care. Throughout her career, patient advocacy, education, and relationship-building have remained at the heart of everything she does.

Beyond her professional role, Melissa is committed to giving back to her community. She serves as Luncheon Chair for Bay Area Community Assistance (BACA), helping connect healthcare professionals and support local seniors, and is an active Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo volunteer with the Go Tejano Rodeo Committee, where she supports scholarship fundraising and community outreach. A Certified Health Coach and Notary Public, she is recognized for her compassionate leadership, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to service. A Certified Health Coach and Notary Public, she is recognized for her compassionate leadership, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to service. Whether caring for patients, mentoring others, or strengthening community partnerships, Melissa strives to leave every person and every community better than she found them.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to compassion, perseverance, and the relationships I’ve built throughout my career. I’ve always believed that healthcare is about more than treating a condition; it’s about listening, educating, and supporting people through some of life’s most important moments. By leading with integrity, continuing to learn, and staying committed to serving others, I’ve been fortunate to build lasting partnerships and make a meaningful impact in both healthcare and my community.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to always leave people better than you found them and to remember that your reputation is your greatest asset. Skills can be learned, but integrity, compassion, and the way you treat others leave a lasting impression. Throughout my career, I’ve found that leading with kindness, following through on my commitments, and building genuine relationships have opened more doors than any title ever could.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

One of the greatest blessings in my career has been having supportive leaders and mentors who believed in me and challenged me to grow. My advice is to find someone you can learn from, ask questions, and never be afraid to seek mentorship. Be self-motivated, step up when opportunities arise, and don’t shy away from challenges. Growth often happens outside of our comfort zone. Say yes to new opportunities, continue learning, and trust yourself. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; you’ll spend your life waiting. Start where you are, use the strengths you have, and believe you’re capable of far more than you realize.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in hospice today is overcoming the misconceptions surrounding end-of-life care. Many patients and families associate hospice with giving up, when in reality it’s about improving quality of life, preserving dignity, and providing compassionate support. Through education and open conversations, we can help families understand that hospice is about living as comfortably and meaningfully as possible, while ensuring they never have to navigate the journey alone.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, compassion, and service are the values that guide every aspect of my life. I believe in leading with empathy, treating everyone with dignity and respect, and building genuine relationships rooted in trust. Whether caring for patients, supporting families, mentoring colleagues, or volunteering in my community, I strive to serve with purpose and leave every person better than I found them.
