Her Interview
Ten minutes with Melissa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute a significant part of my success to the mentorship of an exceptional leader early in my career. Throughout my time in Boston, I had the opportunity to work for the same controller across different companies, and her guidance provided the foundation for everything I know today. She invested in my professional growth, taught me the complexities of the business, and challenged me to become a stronger leader. That experience reinforced my belief in the power of mentorship and the importance of learning from leaders who are willing to invest in your long-term success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is that true leadership is measured by how well you develop the people around you. Success is not about individual recognition but about teaching, mentoring, and empowering others to reach their full potential. I believe the strongest leaders create opportunities for those who follow them, building capable teams and leaving a lasting impact through the growth and success of others.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay persistent, continue developing your skills, and never lose confidence in your abilities. The construction industry is evolving, with more women leading successful companies and securing major opportunities than ever before. There is also a growing community of female leaders who are committed to supporting and mentoring the next generation. Trust the process, embrace every opportunity to learn, and don't be afraid to take your place at the table.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the construction industry is continuing to navigate a traditionally male-dominated environment while establishing credibility and leadership. At the same time, this presents an incredible opportunity to help reshape the industry through mentorship, collaboration, and diverse perspectives. I believe organizations that embrace strong leadership, invest in developing talent, and recognize the value of different experiences will be best positioned for long-term success and innovation.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are balance, integrity, and family. Above all else, I am a mother and wife,, and my children will always be my highest priority. Maintaining healthy boundaries between my professional responsibilities and my personal life allows me to be fully present in both roles. I believe that protecting what matters most outside of work ultimately makes me a stronger, more focused leader and supports long-term personal and professional success.
