Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to showing up, remaining open to new opportunities, and maintaining a genuine sense of curiosity. From an early age, I have always been driven to understand the “why” behind everything, and that natural curiosity has shaped the way I approach challenges, relationships, and growth. I believe in the importance of putting myself in someone else’s position, even when it feels uncomfortable, because empathy and perspective are essential for meaningful leadership. My passion, drive, and commitment to continuous learning have allowed me to adapt in an ever-evolving business environment. I strive to embrace each day with purpose, move initiatives forward with intention, and recognize the importance of taking moments to pause, reflect, and recharge along the way.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received came from my grandfather, who reminded me never to let someone else define my abilities or limitations. He taught me that being a woman, being underestimated, or facing obstacles should never determine what I can achieve. Instead, I should always be willing to challenge assumptions, explore possibilities, and find out for myself what is truly possible. His words reinforced the importance of confidence, resilience, and believing in my own potential because the limits we place on ourselves are often the only ones that truly hold us back.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the IT industry is to recognize the value of both technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills. The field is filled with incredibly talented individuals doing innovative work behind the scenes, and it is important to advocate for yourself, ensure your contributions are recognized, and always acknowledge the efforts of others. There are many opportunities to build a unique path by developing skills that complement technical abilities, such as communication, collaboration, and translating complex concepts into clear, meaningful messages. By partnering with others, supporting talented teammates, and bridging the gap between technical and nontechnical audiences, you can create a valuable niche for yourself and expand your opportunities for growth and success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunities in my field come from the ability to transform challenges into meaningful solutions. When a user approaches me with a problem, even if they are frustrated, I focus on listening beyond the emotion to understand the root cause and identify what truly needs to be addressed. I find great fulfillment in developing solutions, putting them into action, and seeing the impact they create in the real world. There is something incredibly rewarding about taking ideas and technical work from concept to completion and watching people successfully interact with the systems and tools I helped build. Knowing that everything is working smoothly and hearing that users have no issues is one of the greatest indicators that the behind-the-scenes effort has achieved its purpose.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are curiosity, empathy, passion, and continuous growth. I believe it is essential to be willing to step into someone else’s perspective, even when it is uncomfortable, because understanding different viewpoints allows us to create better solutions and build stronger connections. I am passionate about pursuing what matters, advocating for meaningful ideas, and approaching each day with purpose and drive. As a lifelong learner, I am always seeking opportunities to grow, adapt, and expand my knowledge. I believe in embracing life fully while also recognizing the importance of balance and taking time to pause, reflect, and recharge. The phrase festina lente, meaning “hurry up slowly,” represents my approach: move forward with intention, maintain momentum, and take thoughtful moments to ensure the journey is just as meaningful as the destination.
