Her Story

About Melissa

Melissa Carney is a Maintenance Director with more than 22 years of experience in maintenance for long-term care facilities, including 9 years in her current position. Her career path includes prior work in property management and ownership of a construction company where she performed a wide range of tasks from drywall to appliance repair. She began studying law in law school but found greater satisfaction in practical work after life circumstances changed her direction. Melissa is now establishing Guardian Senior Home Services as an LLC to deliver home maintenance for seniors, helping them maintain independence. She attributes her success to God and her diet, values treating people fairly and being a decent person, and advises patience and self-awareness for those entering the field. Her biggest challenges include staffing shortages and shifts in facility populations toward younger adults with complex needs, while her primary opportunity lies in her new business venture.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

God. I don't know how I acquired half the knowledge I have to do just about anything. My diet, that's the honest truth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

If you love what you do, then you just stick to that and don't worry about what anybody else says. It'll all work itself out in the wash.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It just takes some effort. Be patient and know your limits. Good things come if you're just a good person.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is staffing and how nursing home facilities have changed with more younger adults who have had strokes, been homeless, or have mental issues. The biggest opportunity for me right now is starting my own business, Guardian Senior Home Services.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

To be a decent person. To treat people fair. Get along as much as you can. And enjoy the ride.
