About Melissa

Melissa Coln serves as the director of a group home in the human services field in York, Pennsylvania. Her career began in 2015 when she worked at a group home, which led her into human services. From 2018 to 2024, she worked in case management before advancing to her current role as director. Coln specializes in trauma-informed care and holds a Bachelor's of Humanities in Communications and Writing from Penn State. She oversees programs, mentors residents, prepares monthly reports, ensures access to medical and mental health providers, and supports educational and career growth. Her personal experiences with trauma as a youth inspire her work helping others navigate similar challenges. Coln continues her father's philanthropic legacy by organizing the Passing the Torch Youth Empowerment Games, which foster interactions between youth and law enforcement. She attributes her success to God providing her with talents and opportunities in spaces she never imagined.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I can honestly say, honestly to God, I feel like He's given me, you know, the talents and the opportunities to be in spaces I never dreamed of.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

It sounds so cliche, but when you love what you're doing, and you have a heart and passion for it, it never makes your job feel like work.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Have a clear goal in mind. You know, outline a plan and stick to it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Possibly just, Funding and resources sometimes, depending on, you know, what you want to do and what you want to accomplish.
