About Melissa
Melissa Hirst is a seasoned legal management professional and Chief Operating Officer at Altitude Community Law P.C. in Denver, Colorado, bringing more than 25 years of experience in law firm administration. She began her career as a legal assistant and progressively took on greater responsibilities supporting attorneys before transitioning into firm administration and operational leadership. Since joining Altitude Community Law P.C. in 2014, Melissa has overseen daily operations, human resources, accounting, facilities, technology, risk management, and strategic initiatives, helping the firm operate efficiently and adapt to changing needs.
Melissa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Robert Morris University–Illinois and a Master’s degree in Legal Administration from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Her expertise encompasses law firm operations, human resources, budgeting, forecasting, employee development, process improvement, and organizational management. She is also deeply involved with the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), where she has served on the International Board of Directors, contributed to professional education, and mentored legal management professionals. Her contributions to the organization have earned her recognition as a Volunteer Member of the Year.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Melissa is passionate about continuous learning, leadership, and serving as a change agent within the legal management profession. She takes pride in helping emerging legal administrators develop their skills and contributing to the advancement of the profession on a broader scale. Outside of work and her volunteer commitments, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and supporting animal rescue organizations alongside her husband. Her career reflects a strong commitment to leadership, professional development, operational excellence, and making a lasting impact within the legal community.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the strong Midwestern work ethic I learned from my family. I was raised to believe that your reputation is built on how hard you work, and that you should always be willing to step up and get the job done.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never stop learning and investing in your education. Continuous growth will help you recognize the value you can bring to any organization. Education is a lifelong pursuit, and hard work is essential to success.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge and opportunity is staying ahead of the constant changes in legal management. I focus on embracing industry trends while keeping my firm’s unique needs and goals at the forefront. For me, it’s always about being a change agent who helps my firm grow and adapt.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are loyalty, dedication, and teamwork. I believe the whole is greater than the individual, and that meaningful change comes from balancing the organization’s broader goals with attention to the details. Creating positive change that benefits everyone is both motivating and rewarding to me.
