However, in 2020, her life changed as she entered the healthcare field as a frontline medical courier during the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience became a launching point for rapid advancement into leadership roles, including dispatch supervisor and asset manager within major hospital systems. Along the way, she developed deep expertise in logistics, supply chain operations, and healthcare infrastructure.
A passionate advocate for mentorship and professional development, Melissa is currently pursuing her MBA at the University of Arizona Global Campus. She is especially committed to supporting women and emerging professionals navigating careers in healthcare administration. What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to embracing growth opportunities even when they felt uncertain. A pivotal moment in my career was stepping into healthcare during COVID-19, taking on a frontline role that challenged me but ultimately provided invaluable experience and connections. I’m also deeply grateful for mentors like Mandy Madrigal, whose guidance helped me navigate challenges and grow into leadership roles.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the most impactful pieces of advice I’ve received is never to give up and always strive to be an inspiration. This was shared with me by a mentor, Marcus Jackson, after interviewing me for a previous role, and it has stayed with me throughout my career.
That advice continues to guide me in how I approach challenges, growth, and leadership. It reminds me to stay resilient, keep pushing forward, and lead in a way that positively influences those around me, especially my daughters and the individuals I have the opportunity to mentor.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering healthcare administration or any other field is to invest in both education and networking. Education builds your foundation, and networking creates opportunities. Seek mentors, stay curious, and be intentional about gaining experience that aligns with your long-term goals. Most importantly, believe in your ability to grow into leadership. Your path doesn’t have to be traditional to be successful.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Healthcare administration is evolving rapidly, whether it’s in clinical or non-clinical roles, and one of the biggest challenges is creating accessible pathways for emerging professionals. It’s common for new graduates to face barriers entering the field without clinical experience or established professional networks. At the same time, significant opportunities are shaping the field's future.
The growth of online education and professional development programs is making healthcare careers more accessible than ever. Additionally, there is an increasing demand for skilled leaders in clinical operations, project management, and healthcare infrastructure. Organizations are placing greater emphasis on efficiency, patient-centered care, and innovation, creating space for professionals who are adaptable, collaborative, and forward-thinking. Mentorship and strategic networking remain key drivers of both entry and advancement in this evolving landscape.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Helping others is at the core of everything I do. I am deeply committed to guiding and supporting those around me, whether it’s mentoring colleagues, encouraging emerging professionals, or improving patient experiences. I believe that strong relationships, empathy, and active listening are essential to creating meaningful impact.
