Melissa Mitten
Melissa Mitten is the co-owner and operator of Mitten & Company and Roof Maxx of South Charlotte, a general contracting business specializing in roofing and exterior services for homeowners, property managers, and investors throughout the Carolinas. Alongside her husband, who brings nearly 20 years of industry experience, Melissa launched the company eight years ago and is currently expanding its residential division. She leads two divisions focused on providing reliable, low-stress construction solutions and innovative roof rejuvenation services, helping clients save money, reduce waste, and protect their properties.
Melissa’s professional philosophy emphasizes client education, clear communication, and building trust. She has pioneered a consultative “roof educator” approach that helps homeowners understand their options, reduces anxiety, and empowers them to make informed decisions. Attention to detail and relationship-building are central to her leadership style, and her team is recognized for delivering exceptional service to over 100 HOA communities in the Charlotte area, including being one of two City of Charlotte–preferred contractors serving Charlotte Douglas Airport’s exterior needs.
Before entering the construction industry, Melissa trained as a registered nurse and spent years as a stay-at-home mother, homeschooling five children. Her transition into business ownership reflects adaptability, resilience, and a focus on problem-solving. She is active in her local church and engages in philanthropic work through volunteer initiatives. Melissa encourages women entering the roofing and construction industry to ask questions, communicate effectively, stay adaptable, pay attention to detail, and continuously seek learning opportunities.

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from my mentor, Stacy, whose guidance as a life and business coach has been invaluable in accelerating my personal growth and business development.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to never be afraid to ask questions—you don’t need to know everything to make an impact. Be confident in your expertise, communicate clearly, pay attention to detail, keep learning, and stay adaptable.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Some of the biggest challenges in my field are working in a predominantly male industry, overcoming long-standing communication gaps in the trades, and navigating a high-pressure sales culture. The opportunities lie in leading with education, adopting a low-pressure, consultative approach, and expanding residential services to reach more clients.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are faith, family, and relationships, and I strive to be present and intentional in every interaction, whether personal or professional. I also prioritize clear communication and making a meaningful impact on people’s lives, while balancing my passions for sports, travel, and quality time with my husband, mentor, and loved ones.
