Her Story
About Melissa
I have been in healthcare staffing for almost 10 years, and last year I made a transition to the background and risk side while continuing to work with healthcare staffing clients. As a Customer Success Partner, I work with our biggest clients to build and maintain their background programs. My day is spent supporting my clients, escalating items as they come, and being strategic about solving their problems. I ensure we're integrating the best products into their workflows and systems, and that their onboarding of candidates goes smoothly. I get to put my experience from staffing into play with my clients because I've been in their seat, and now I'm sitting on the other side. One of my most notable professional achievements was leading one of my healthcare staffing teams where, when I came in, they were at 60% on-time starts, and within a year we were able to accomplish over 90% of on-time starts. I also had the honor of being crowned Mrs. Nationwide 2023, where I got to educate people on my platform, which was PMDD, and teach people about the healthcare staffing world while showing my leadership skills outside of my professional world. I hold a bachelor's degree from Bellevue University in marketing management and a master's of Arts degree focused in leadership. Leadership has been my true passion in my career - I love growing and developing people and listening to what they want to accomplish, because in leadership, it's not the leader, it's the people behind them.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Melissa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to never giving up. I take one step at a time, even in difficult situations, and I show up and do what my job is. I believe in taking chances, taking risks, and keeping learning. I show accountability and demonstrate that I have a desire to care. These principles have guided me throughout my career and have been key to achieving my goals.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to be a continuous learner and never stop learning. No matter how far you go up the ladder, there is still room to grow, and you can learn from anyone. I believe in always reading things, looking at everything, and having that desire to learn. Even when it hurts not being the smartest person in the room, you still get something out of it. This mindset has been invaluable in my career journey.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to women entering this industry is to show up, take the chance, take the risk, and keep learning. Be there for your clients. This is a field where women can be very successful, but if you show up and you are learning, you show accountability, and you show that you have a desire to care, you will be successful. Don't be afraid to take chances and get outside of your normal comfort zone, and never doubt yourself.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is identity - being able to prove that the people who are applying are the people that they say they are. The industry is constantly changing, whether it's healthcare staffing or backgrounds, and you have to be able to stay up to date on compliance and laws to make sure you are doing the right thing. With AI coming into play, we face the challenge of ensuring that the people who are walking into the door to start a job are the correct person. It's an instant changing motion that requires constant vigilance and adaptation.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are accountability and expectations. I believe in knowing what your role is, understanding that, and doing what you say you're going to do. Being authentic is also crucial to me. Your personality's going to come through no matter what, so trying to hide that is not going to come across as authentic. I believe in being authentic and true to yourself in everything you do.
