Her Story

About Melissa

I've been working as a communications strategist for about 10 years now, since 2016, across various organizations. My work focuses on four main areas: PR and media, customer service training, motivational speaking, and editing and publishing books. Before this, I spent 15 years in banking, where my exceptional customer service skills opened an incredible door for me. I handled a very difficult situation with an angry customer who happened to be a vice chancellor at a university. I won her over by handling her matter not just expeditiously, but meticulously. She invited me to do a customer service training seminar at the university and wrote me a thank you letter on the university's letterhead. I posted it on Facebook in 2016, and customers who were heading major corporations saw it and started requesting customer service training. That gave me the confidence to leave my bank job and become a consultant. After that, I met the right people and ended up hosting radio and television, and doing public relations for government officials. Recently, I worked on PR strategy for a congressional candidate running for District 18 in Houston, developing a public relations plan to get his name out to different areas of the community. I've also written two books, including a customer service workbook that's both a standalone resource and the official tool I use for training. I'm having a book launch at Barnes & Noble in the Woodlands in May. I hold a Master's in Communication from Texas Southern University and an MBA from University of South Wales.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to a single act of exceptional customer service that opened a huge door for me. When I was working in banking, I had a very difficult, very tough customer who was the vice chancellor at a university. The bank had an issue with her, and I decided I was going to win this customer over. I handled her matter not just expeditiously, but meticulously, even though she was very angry. I was able to win her over, and she literally invited me to the university to do a customer service training seminar in 2016. That just blew me away because I had never done a seminar before, but I went and did really well. She wrote me a thank you letter on the university's letterhead, and I put it on Facebook. Some of my customers who were heading major corporations saw it and started asking me to do customer service training at their corporations. I started to get an influx of customers, and that gave me the confidence to leave my bank job. After that, I had more time on my hands as a consultant, and I ended up meeting a lot of the right people. Next thing you know, I'm hosting radio, I'm hosting television, and doing public relations for government officials. I think that single act of winning that customer just led to such a big open door.
