Her career began unexpectedly when she walked into a leasing office while searching for an apartment and expressed interest in the work; that moment led to an opportunity six months later that launched her long-term career in the industry. Early in her professional journey, she also gained experience in retail and spent a brief period in social work and psychology, all of which contributed to her strong interpersonal and service-oriented approach. Melissa’s professional background is deeply rooted in property operations, having progressed through leasing and property management roles before moving into compliance and leadership. This operational foundation gives her a practical and well-rounded understanding of affordable housing requirements and on-the-ground challenges, strengthening her effectiveness in ensuring regulatory adherence across multiple states. She is also a licensed Housing Tax Credit professional, a Certified Apartment Manager through the National Apartment Association, and currently maintains an active compliance license. She completed her academic studies online through Grand Canyon University in 2012, further supporting her professional development and advancement. 01What do you attribute your success to?

It's never a dull day in this industry. You're never going to get the same day. There's always going to be one fire over here and another one over there. It's ever-changing. What I'm most proud of is overcoming my challenges and believing in myself when I didn't think I could do it. You have to learn to trust yourself. The most rewarding part of my work is how I inspire others. I like to encourage everyone to believe in their abilities, to continue learning, and not to be afraid to pursue leadership opportunities. There are so many roles and positions you can step into in this industry.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Trust yourself. Don't wait until you're comfortable to do something. If you're given the opportunity, take it. This industry has a path that you can follow, you can grow in it, and growth doesn't happen unless you step outside of your comfort zone. This industry is known every day to be a little bit challenging in that way.
