About Melissa
Melissa Thomas is a self-employed medical biller who has been in the field since 2012 and has operated independently since 2019. She began her career after deciding against direct patient care due to concerns about exposure to illness and the risk of bringing it home to her children, instead focusing on the administrative side of medical practices. Thomas has worked for multiple medical billing companies handling various specialties before obtaining her own contracts. Her daily work involves navigating constantly changing rules and guidelines through research to ensure providers receive proper payment. She has helped small companies reduce outstanding revenue significantly by cleaning up their billing processes. Thomas places high importance on putting God first in her work, personal life, and with her children. She sees AI as both a potential challenge and opportunity in medical billing depending on its use. Her advice to young women entering the industry is to not hold back and show exactly who they are.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Melissa
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't tuck your tail. Show them exactly who you are.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI is becoming a factor. It could go either way as a challenge or opportunity, it just depends on how it's used. I do see benefits of it, but I also am seeing some negative parts of it as well.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
To be honest, I think you gotta put God first in everything. And in your work, it should be shown. In your personal life, it should be shown. In your children, it should be shown.
