Her Story

About Melody

Melody Alvarez is a recent graduate of the University of California, Irvine, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in Criminology, Law, and Society and Social Ecology. Her academic background has provided her with a strong foundation in legal systems, social issues, mediation, and client advocacy. She is also pursuing additional legal education through a satellite paralegal certificate program to further develop her skills and prepare for a career in the legal and public-service fields.

Professionally, Melody currently volunteers with SAFE Family Justice Centers, where she supports victims of domestic violence through client intake, resource coordination, case reviews, temporary restraining order paperwork, and emotional support. She also gained valuable mediation experience through her internship with Waymakers Dispute and Resolution Services, where she participated in family mediation and courthouse proceedings. Her previous experience as a behavioral technician and English tutor further strengthened her communication, teamwork, organization, and ability to work effectively with diverse individuals.

Melody is passionate about serving others and building a career centered on advocacy, justice, and community support. She is particularly interested in opportunities within the legal and public-safety fields and is pursuing a dispatch opportunity with a local police department. Her determination is shaped by her desire to demonstrate that higher education and professional opportunities are achievable for young women from communities where attending a four-year university may be less common.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melody

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents, my younger brothers, and the friends I made through college. They helped me remain focused and reminded me of my goals and who I am no matter how hard life gets.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Women should always keep moving forward no matter what circumstances come their way, believe in themselves, know that their dreams and aspirations matter, and seek help when needed by relying on community.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make education your number one priority and focus. Do not let anybody discourage you from pursuing higher education even if it is not normal in your community. Keep your eyes focused on the prize and set an example so others can say she did it, I can do it too.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is staying positive and resilient when opportunities do not come as quickly as I hope. Through my internship with SAFE Family Justice Centers and my pursuit of a dispatch position with a local police department, I’ve learned the importance of persistence, visibility, and continuing to seek opportunities even when doors do not immediately open.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life are consistency, honesty, and authenticity. I believe in staying true to myself, being dependable in my commitments, and communicating honestly with others.
