Her Story

About Melody

Melody E. Confer serves on the Membership Team at Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the oldest and largest professional photography nonprofit association in the world. In her role as Member Engagement Specialist, she focuses on strengthening member experience, enhancing retention, and delivering value to a global community of professional photographers. She is recognized for her ability to combine storytelling, communication, and service-driven strategy to support meaningful engagement across the organization.

She began her journey with PPA during her senior year at Oglethorpe University through an internship in the Marketing Department, where she contributed to website content writing and the development of member-facing resources. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing in 2020 and gaining additional experience in digital marketing, she transitioned back into PPA in a full-time capacity, advancing through progressively expanded roles within the membership department. Her academic foundation in storytelling and critical analysis continues to inform her work in communications and member engagement.

Confer is a recipient of the 30 Under 30 Award from the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) Atlanta chapter, recognizing her contributions and emerging leadership within the nonprofit sector. She is an active member of YNPN Atlanta and supports Girls on the Run, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to empowering young girls through confidence-building and physical activity. She attributes her professional growth to her ambition as a first-generation college graduate, the critical thinking and community-focused education gained at Oglethorpe University, consistent internship and professional experiences, and the supportive culture at PPA.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melody

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong sense of ambition and determination as a first-generation college student, which has driven me to consistently pursue growth and opportunity. My education at Oglethorpe University equipped me with critical thinking skills and a deep appreciation for community engagement and service. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have actively sought internships and part-time roles to build practical experience and develop my skill set. I also credit my success to the support of my community, mentors, supervisors, and the collaborative and encouraging culture at Professional Photographers of America (PPA), all of which have played a vital role in my continued development.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to find and focus on what you genuinely love, and to not hesitate to use others as a resource along the way. Pursuing work that aligns with your interests creates long-term motivation and fulfillment, while staying open to learning from mentors, colleagues, and your broader network helps you grow faster and make more informed decisions. I’ve found that combining passion with collaboration not only strengthens your skill set but also opens doors to opportunities you might not reach on your own.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is simple: don’t be afraid to go for it. Step into opportunities even when you don’t feel fully ready, and trust that growth happens through experience, not perfection. Be proactive about seeking out internships, mentorship, and hands-on learning, and don’t hesitate to ask questions or advocate for yourself along the way. Surround yourself with supportive people, stay curious, and remain open to learning—confidence builds over time, but courage is what gets you started.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the nonprofit sector is the ongoing constraint of limited bandwidth and budget, which can impact how quickly and extensively initiatives can be executed. However, these limitations also create meaningful opportunities to think creatively, prioritize effectively, and remain adaptable in project planning and delivery. Working within these constraints often encourages innovative problem-solving and strategic pivots that ultimately strengthen outcomes and deepen impact across programs and member engagement efforts.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Communication and trust are the two values I consider most important in both my work and personal life. Clear, consistent communication ensures alignment, reduces misunderstandings, and helps build strong, collaborative relationships across teams and communities. Trust is equally essential, as it creates a foundation for reliability, respect, and accountability—allowing meaningful work and relationships to grow and thrive over time.
