Ten minutes with Melody
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to empathy, curiosity, and a genuine desire to help others. By listening with compassion, staying open to learning, and continuously striving for personal growth, I have been able to shape a meaningful academic and professional journey.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received came from Kris Boggs, one of the most influential mentors in my journey. Her guidance and encouragement helped shape and strengthened my confidence in pursuing a meaningful career that aligns with my passions and values. The best emotional advice I’d received from a Taekwondo club president, Bonnie, was, “it’s okay to be scared and protecting something or someone while you’re scared, is bravery.”
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to embrace the moments when there is a gap between what is and what could be. Those moments often create opportunities for meaningful change, innovation, and growth. Stay curious, trust your perspective, and have the courage to help shape the future.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges and opportunities in my field today are centered around sustainability, accessibility, and thoughtful development. I believe we have an opportunity to empower the next generation of leaders to create more inclusive, environmentally responsible, and people-centered communities through innovative urban planning, collaboration, and forward-thinking solutions.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me in both my work and personal life are compassion, service, lifelong learning, and community. I believe meaningful work begins with caring for others and striving to create a positive impact wherever I serve.
Outside of work and school, I am passionate about singing with the Second Verse Choir, where music helps create meaningful connections for individuals and families affected by dementia. I also enjoy exploring geography, sustainability, and the ways thoughtful planning can help build stronger, more inclusive communities for future generations.
