Her Story
About Melody
Melody Sayrany is a freelance science writer and marketer specializing in science communications, with a decade of experience translating complex research into accessible content. She has spent the past several years building her freelance practice, going full-time within the last year. Melody holds a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in biological research. After finishing her master's, she realized lab work wasn't the right fit and pivoted toward science writing and marketing instead. Her career began at CellCarta, a contract research organization, where she worked as a science writer in the marketing department — a role that set her on a path toward full-time science marketing. She went on to work as an editor and educational marketing manager for a life improvement company, where she helped develop the online course Sprout Academy, and later took on additional science marketing roles at other organizations. Today, Melody runs her own freelance business, helping pharma, biotech, and related companies turn complex scientific messaging into clear, compelling content and marketing materials.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Melody
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Have a plan, and do your research. I spent a lot of time investigating, consulting with other business owners, and studying companies that had already done what I was trying to do. Be a student — learn as much as you can, build the best plan you can, and then execute when you're ready.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest opportunity is the never-ending flow of science innovation from pharma and biotech companies needing to connect with the public amid misinformation. The biggest challenge is AI causing layoffs in marketing and writing, eroding trust and credibility in content.
