Her Story
About Menna
Menna Elsaka is a molecular and translational research associate scientist with approximately eight years of experience spanning academic research, clinical environments, and specialty pharmacy practice. She began her journey in 2019 as a chemistry and biochemistry student at Lamar University, where she also completed competitive research in microbiology and immunology. During this time, she developed strong foundational skills in molecular biology techniques, scientific communication, and experimental design through hands-on lab work and poster presentations. Alongside her academic research, she worked for about two and a half years as a senior pharmacy technician in specialty pharmacy settings, gaining valuable experience in patient-facing care and specialty medications. After completing her undergraduate degree, she pursued a Master of Science in Medical Science at UNT Health Fort Worth, further strengthening her clinical research background and deepening her interest in translational science. Throughout her career, Menna has consistently balanced laboratory research with healthcare exposure, shaping a well-rounded scientific perspective. Today, Menna serves as an Associate Researcher III at UTHealth Houston in the OBGYN department, where she focuses on molecular research involving human samples, PCR, and data-driven analysis. Her daily work is highly structured and detail-oriented, involving coordination with her team, strict adherence to experimental protocols, meticulous documentation, and presentation of findings. Driven by her long-term goal of becoming a physician-scientist, she continues to build expertise at the intersection of research and medicine while contributing to impactful scientific discovery.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Menna
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to curiosity, persistence, and a strong work ethic. I've always been genuinely passionate about science and understanding how things work, which motivates me to keep learning and improving. Whether in research or pharmacy, I've learned that challenges are inevitable, but staying persistent, being adaptable, and maintaining a positive attitude have helped me continue growing and achieving my goals.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received was to focus on consistent effort rather than immediate results. Not every opportunity works out exactly as planned, but if you stay disciplined, continue learning, and keep working toward your goals, progress will follow. That advice has helped me navigate both research and healthcare roles, overcome setbacks, and continue growing professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering science and medicine to trust their abilities and not let self-doubt hold them back. Some of the most valuable opportunities in my career came from stepping outside my comfort zone, asking questions, and being willing to learn. Don't be afraid to take up space, share your ideas, and pursue goals that may seem ambitious. your perspective and contributions matter.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities in medicine today is the ability to bridge research and patient care. As someone working in translational research, I find it exciting that discoveries made in the laboratory can directly impact how diseases are diagnosed and treated. The challenge is keeping pace with the rapid growth of scientific knowledge while ensuring patients continue to receive compassionate, evidence-based care.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are dedication, curiosity, and service to others. I believe in working hard, supporting those around me, and continually seeking opportunities to learn and grow. These values guide me both in my research career and in my personal life, where I enjoy volunteering, traveling, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds.
