Michéala Johnson is a wine professional and hospitality specialist whose career began in her family’s Irish pubs, where she started working at age 15. Through early hands-on experience across all aspects of restaurant operations—from dishwashing and serving to bartending—she developed a strong foundation in hospitality. While studying biology and psychology at Molloy University, she continued working in restaurants and discovered a passion for wine after being introduced to structured wine education by a sommelier in Montauk, which ultimately shaped her long-term career path.

She built an extensive career in the New York fine dining and hospitality industry, advancing into leadership roles in beverage and sommelier programs. Her experience includes working as Sommelier at Jean-Georges Management, Head Sommelier at The Bastion Collection (Le Jardinier), and Beverage Manager at Nick & Toni’s. In these roles, she curated and managed wine lists, designed food and wine pairings for tasting menus, oversaw cellar inventory, and led staff education initiatives, contributing to Michelin-level beverage program execution.

Today, Michéala Johnson is the founder of MJ Wine Consulting, where she focuses on wine procurement, curated wine events, and customized beverage education for both private clients and hospitality teams. She is a Certified Sommelier with WSET Level 3 certification through the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and holds a Champagne Specialist certification from Comité Champagne. Currently pursuing advanced certifications including the WSET Diploma and Court of Master Sommeliers track, she is dedicated to elevating wine education, building thoughtful beverage programs, and mentoring professionals within the hospitality industry.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to choosing a career path that brings me genuine joy, while maintaining a strong sense of curiosity and focus. When I truly love the field I am in, the daily work becomes more than a routine—it becomes something I am genuinely invested in. That intrinsic motivation has been a key driver for me, giving me the resilience to navigate challenges and the persistence to continue growing. It has allowed me to push beyond obstacles and achieve more in my career than I initially thought possible.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received also serves as foundational life advice from my grandfather, who always encouraged me to “keep a book under my arm.” I have carried this philosophy throughout my journey, not as a pursuit of credentials, but as a commitment to lifelong learning and curiosity. After completing a major professional exam, I found myself returning to new studies just two weeks later—not because I had to, but because I wanted to continue growing. This mindset has helped me stay adaptable, keep my perspective fresh, and consistently strengthen my skills in an ever-evolving professional landscape.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay curious and committed to continuous learning, as growth often comes from being open to new ideas and experiences. I would also encourage choosing work that genuinely brings you fulfillment, as passion for what you do can sustain you through challenges and long-term career development. Equally important is surrounding yourself with a supportive community that values shared knowledge and collaboration, while also prioritizing balance and taking care of your mental and physical well-being along the way.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in the industry is the global slowdown in wine consumption, driven by shifting preferences among younger generations who are drinking less alcohol or exploring alternative beverages, as well as pricing barriers for premium wines. However, this also presents a major opportunity to reimagine how wine is positioned and experienced. Today’s consumers are seeking authenticity, storytelling, and meaningful connection with what they drink, creating space for the industry to become more accessible, transparent, and experience-driven rather than tradition-focused.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My most deeply held value is balance, which requires constant awareness in a demanding industry. It is easy to become fully consumed by the cycle of events, tastings, and ongoing professional development, so I make it a priority to regularly step back and assess how I am allocating my time and energy. For me, true sustainability means intentionally creating space to unplug, while also nurturing relationships with family and friends, ensuring that professional ambition does not come at the expense of personal well-being.
