Her Story
About Michaela
Michaela Thomas is a strategic communications leader, entrepreneur, and community advocate whose career has been defined by her ability to connect people, organizations, and communities through purposeful communication. She currently serves as Director of Strategic Engagement at OCV, where she partners with public safety agencies across the United States to develop innovative communication strategies, strengthen community engagement, and implement technology solutions that improve transparency and public trust. In addition to her work with OCV, Michaela is the founder of Flourish Early Learning Center, which opened in 2024 to help address the growing need for quality childcare, and the founder of Newsy Mom, an online news platform dedicated to providing valuable information and resources for parents and families.
Before transitioning into strategic engagement and public safety communications, Michaela spent a decade as a radio journalist, building a strong foundation in storytelling, media relations, and audience engagement. She later brought those skills into public safety, serving in leadership roles where she modernized communication strategies, expanded digital outreach, and strengthened relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Communications from Kent State University and has completed extensive professional training in Sunshine Law and public information, crisis communication, behavioral and leadership management, human resources, Phil Chalmers Threat Assessment, government social media strategy, Community Engagement Certification, CPR, and first aid. Her expertise centers on strategic communication, public relations, entrepreneurship, community engagement, and leadership.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Michaela is deeply committed to serving her community through volunteerism and collaborative partnerships. She has supported organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, where Newsy Mom was recognized as a Community Partner, the Tuscarawas County Clinic for the Working Uninsured, Empower Tuscarawas, Access Tuscarawas, Bridges to Wellness, the Backpack Program, local health departments, and the YMCA. Her work has also been recognized through letters of commendation from state legislators following the opening of Flourish Early Learning Center. Guided by the values of integrity, courage, perseverance, faith, and respect, Michaela believes that meaningful communication and authentic relationships are the foundation for lasting impact. When she is away from work, she enjoys traveling with her husband and two daughters and embracing the simple life on their hobby farm, where they raise goats, chickens, pigs, and care for the occasional stray animal.

Ten minutes with Michaela
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, determination, and the lessons I've learned from failure and great mentors. I strive to embrace new opportunities with courage, trust God's direction, and value the support of community partners whose encouragement and collaboration have helped me make a lasting impact.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to build meaningful relationships through networking, take time to think before responding, and approach big goals one step at a time. I've also learned never to believe an idea is too ambitious—with a clear plan and consistent action, you can create meaningful change.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women entering this field to network, build relationships with successful professionals, and learn from their experiences. Don't be intimidated—ask questions, seek guidance, and embrace collaboration over competition. The connections you build and the knowledge you gain can open doors to incredible opportunities.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is overcoming the stigma surrounding childcare professionals, who are often undervalued and underpaid despite their critical role in early childhood development. There is also a need for greater legislative awareness and stronger communication across related sectors, including public safety. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities to strengthen collaboration, elevate the value of early childhood educators, and advocate for meaningful change.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide my work and personal life are integrity, courage, perseverance, and respect. I believe in treating everyone with the same dignity and kindness, regardless of their role, having the courage to engage in meaningful conversations, and continuing to move forward after setbacks with resilience and determination.
