Michele Garnett serves as Fire Captain with Henrico Fire in Henrico County, Virginia, where she holds a unique 40-hour position as the long-term care liaison on the care team, working with 51 long-term care facilities. She began her firefighting journey 18 years ago as a volunteer to become a paramedic after owning two businesses and has accumulated 16 and a half years as a career firefighter, earning promotion to captain in 2023. Garnett earned a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice Forensic Science from VCU and a Master's in Public Safety from the University of Virginia. Her certifications include Firefighter 1 and 2, Instructor 1, Honor Guard Academy, CIT as both trained and instructor, peer support team member, QUITA, peer assessor certified, Leadership Henrico, and EMS Paramedic certification at the intermediate level. She is a member of the IAFF, Union 1568, and the National Association of Firefighters. Garnett specializes in community risk reduction, long-term care liaison work, peer recovery, and crisis intervention training. She also participates in the Honor Guard for line-of-duty deaths and other events. Outside her primary role, Garnett has volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused children for over 35 years through Piedmont CASA, previously with Denver CASA and Voices for Children in San Diego.
