Her Story
About Michele
I was a registered nurse for 31 years in administration and acute care including cardiology and ER, ending as a home health case manager. A 2017 cycling accident required speech and cognitive therapy and ended my nursing career. I trained in Santa Fe as an end-of-life doula and founded Liminal Shores collective for community support among doulas and therapists. My work now focuses on being a calm presence for clients and families in planning, storytelling, and active dying stages.

Ten minutes with Michele
01What do you attribute your success to?
Following the Light
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Follow your passion and what's meaningful to you. Don't go to college unless you know what you want to do. Take time after high school for service work like AmeriCorps to gain perspective.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To seek community where you can be supported, educated and have a tribe of fellows
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges for this new role are currently community and healthcare provider education on the death doula role. Also integrating our role within the end of care provider networks so that doulas are perceived as valuable practitioners which create a larger blanket of support to the end-of-life client; we are not taking the place of hospice which directs the medical plan of care but support the plan of care in ways that the time constraints of hospice care can limit support to the client
