Ten minutes with Michell
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to determination, consistency, and having the right support system along the way. I believe we all benefit from having people who encourage us, challenge us, motivate us, and believe in what we’re capable of achieving. I also believe in setting clear goals, creating a plan, putting it into action, and staying committed—even when progress feels slow. Success isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up, staying the course, and continuing to move forward.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is, “Trust but verify.” Kenny, who became my mentor when he hired me as the Emergency Department Manager for Aventus Healthcare in Maryland, shared this advice with me. It taught me the importance of trusting my team and colleagues while also taking the time to verify information, make informed decisions, and remain accountable for the outcomes.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
If I were giving advice to someone just starting out in nursing, I would definitely recommend considering a community college program. It can provide valuable hands-on experience while also allowing you to significantly reduce the cost of your education.
I would also encourage new nurses to consider working in an emergency department or intensive care unit early in their careers. These environments expose you to a wide range of conditions, procedures, and patient situations, allowing you to learn a tremendous amount. The experience and confidence you gain in those settings can provide an incredible foundation for your nursing career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Nursing continues to face many of the same challenges we’re seeing nationwide, particularly the ongoing shortage of nurses and the demands that come with working in healthcare. I’ve been fortunate, though, to work alongside a great team that is incredibly supportive and committed to one another. Having people around you who are willing to step in, support each other, and work together makes a tremendous difference when facing those challenges.
At the same time, becoming a Group Fitness Coordinator and launching my own business have pushed me outside of my comfort zone in new ways. Taking on leadership in the fitness industry and building my own brand have challenged me to put myself out there, get my name and message in front of people, and build trust with those I hope to serve.
I’ve learned that growth often comes from being willing to step outside of what feels comfortable, take on new challenges, and surround yourself with people who support you along the way.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is one of my core values. To me, integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching and staying true to your word. It also means being honest and transparent in the way you communicate and in the way you treat others.
I also place a high value on a strong work ethic. I believe in showing up, putting in the effort, being dependable, and taking pride in what I do. Whether it’s my career, fitness, or building my business, I believe that consistency, accountability, and doing things the right way matter more than taking shortcuts. Ultimately, I want people to know that they can trust me—not just because of what I say, but because of how I show up.
