About Michelle

Michelle Ott is a Crisis Counselor and Student Support Coordinator for Frisco Independent School District in Texas. In this role, she supports a high school and two middle schools by providing extended counseling services to students facing crises such as grief, family issues, and homelessness. She also conducts professional development for teachers and staff on topics including mental health support, suicide prevention, crisis intervention, and CPR training. With approximately 24 years of experience in education, Ott began her career as a special education teacher and behavior specialist for 10 years before transitioning to middle school and high school counseling positions, eventually advancing to her current district-level role. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in sociology from Texas Tech University, where she also ran track, graduating in 1994. She earned her master's degree in school counseling from Dallas Baptist University around 2004-2005. Additionally, Ott is a certified special education teacher and has pursued further training in life coaching, drawing inspiration from figures such as Mel Robbins. She maintains an active membership in the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and balances her professional responsibilities with life coaching sessions on evenings and weekends. Her approach emphasizes a holistic, village-like support system rooted in her faith and community values.

01What do you attribute your success to?

My parents and being raised in the church with a village of love, care, community, connectedness, and faith surrounding me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Run the good race, fight the fight, and know God is with you. Also, I can handle today from Mel Robbins.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Have a passion for it, take care of yourself with self-care, follow your dreams, explore different niches in life coaching, and stay on top of certificates and learning.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include guidelines, rules, and expectations in Texas for counselors, limited access to mental health services, and economic barriers. Opportunities exist due to high need for mental health care allowing expansion as a life coach.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being a good steward, hard work, being a team player, honesty, trustworthiness, teamwork, work ethic, connectedness, valuing yourself and others, bringing the best version of yourself, sharing, giving, caring, and love.
