Her Story

About Michelle

I've kind of always been in marketing. I got started doing web development for a marketing agency, handling all their website builds. As I continued to work with that agency, I grew my skill set in project management and leadership, and dipped my hands in all different areas. I ultimately ended my engagement with them as COO, doing their finances and budgeting and working on a profitability-first model. I spent a lot of time in marketing, but I got started because I developed websites. I was always willing and eager to try a different skill set, so if somebody asked me to do something outside of maybe my traditional role, I was eager and happy to try to contribute to that area and ultimately grow my skills in a lot of different areas because I was willing to say yes.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I guess, supportive people, really. I have always tried, and I enjoy so much working with a team that's very supportive of each other, a team of women, especially. But also, I've worked with some incredible men, too. It's really easy, especially when we're talking about empowering women and everything to really focus on the women, but some men out there are just incredible as well. But I feel like a lot of my drive has come from the supportive environments that I have been in, other team members being really enthusiastic and supportive. Feeling needed, I think, is really important. Feeling valued is really important, and I think that increases our drive to succeed and to help others, and especially when you feel like you're helping your clients, or your team, or your family by what you do, I think that can be really motivating.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

One of the biggest things is I was always willing to try a different skill set, so if somebody asked me to do something that was outside of maybe my traditional role, I was eager and happy to try to contribute to that area, and ultimately grow my skills in a lot of different areas, because I was willing to say yes.
