Her Story

About Michelle

Michelle Stout serves as Recreation Manager at the Community Recreation Center in Arvada, Colorado. She oversees a team of four full-time employees, one hospitality staff member, and three coordinators, managing programs in fitness, arts, education, special events, trips, and excursions for the 50-plus population. Stout began her career in Parks and Recreation after graduating from CSU Fort Collins with a degree in health and exercise science, initially working in personal training and group fitness before taking a coordinator role for active adults and fitness in Eaton. She joined Apex in Arvada as a fitness coordinator for three years, then moved to the Active Adults Center, where she now focuses exclusively on older adults. Her contributions have been recognized with the Colorado Parks and Rec Association Outstanding New Professional award in 2021 and the Greater Arvada Chamber of Commerce Young Professional award in 2022. Outside of work, Stout is deeply involved in her community as an ambassador for the Greater Arvada Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Inspiring Women's group, and incoming president of Kiwanis after four years of involvement. She attributes her success to finding passion in her work and advises young women entering the field to get comfortable being uncomfortable, as awkward situations often lead to the best opportunities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Michelle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think just find something that you love to do. Passion, find what really motivates you from the inside out. It's hard work but it pays off.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get comfortable getting uncomfortable. Embrace awkward situations because the most awkward situations turn into some of the best memories and open up opportunities.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The rising costs of everything is one of our biggest barriers. Opportunities are everywhere - the world is your oyster. You can start as a lifeguard or in swim lessons and grow into many different roles in Parks and Rec.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Trust and community are key. Also health and wellness. Building connections and having a place that feels like a second home for older adults.
