Michelle Jordan Jackson

Michelle Jordan has dedicated more than two decades to advancing special education within the Houston Independent School District, building a career centered on student success, compliance excellence, and educator development. She began her journey in education as a graduate assistant at Texas Southern University, teaching athletic training and health science courses before discovering her passion for special education while working as a clerk in the district. Inspired by the opportunity to help families create meaningful long-term educational plans for their children, she earned her alternative teaching certification and quickly rose through the ranks as a resource teacher, department chairperson, transition coach, and program specialist. Throughout her career, Michelle has become known for her expertise in developing sustainable systems and strengthening special education programs across multiple campuses. She has played a key role in revamping district processes, creating training manuals, developing compliance procedures, and mentoring educators and case managers on implementing effective IEPs and student support strategies. Her leadership expanded further when she became an itinerant senior manager and later Director of Special Education, overseeing middle school campuses throughout Houston while maintaining near-perfect compliance standards despite managing some of the district’s largest caseloads. Today, as a Coordinator 2 for Special Education Services, she continues supporting campuses through the Office of Academics, Systems and Fidelity Unit, including helping integrate AI tools into IEP review processes to improve accuracy and audit readiness. Michelle’s professional philosophy is grounded in teaching, mentorship, and empowering others to grow. A graduate of both University of Phoenix and University of St. Thomas, where she earned master’s degrees in Adult Education and Educational Leadership, she is passionate about helping educators strengthen their skills and confidence. She often says her goal is to teach others everything she knows so they can continue growing beyond her own accomplishments. In addition to her district leadership work, Michelle serves as a Certified CPI trainer, Youth Outreach Servant Leader at Mount Olive Baptist Church, future published devotional author and active community member dedicated to supporting both students and fellow educators across Houston.

Support one another authentically, and grow intentionally. Also, remember to always do “for people” and never do things “to people”.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Bring positivity to the team and you will get positivity back, lead with compassion and clarity.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being able to help many other students and families with all their Special Education needs.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My philosophy has always been about Cultivating the mindset and growth of others and helping them grow beyond where I am. I always tell my team, I need y'all to be able to learn everything that I know, so in case something happens to me, you'll be able to go on and do what the job needs to be done. And if you want to go on my level or pass me, great, just don't forget about me when you get up there. I want people to work in their strengths, but we're also going to develop the weaknesses - that's how we function as a team and as a unit. I'm still about the teaching and learning, and I love getting a chance to pour into others. My proudest accomplishment is definitely being a mom - I have an 8-year-old son, and I do everything for him. Being kind and respectful to others, leading by example, helping others in need, being a good listener, making a difference every day.
