Her Interview
Ten minutes with Michelle (Shelly)
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to Dr. Clive, who mentored me for many years. I learned an incredible amount from him, not only about the technical aspects of the profession but also about patient care. He was patient, kind, and always took the time to explain things thoroughly. His excellent bedside manner set an example for how to treat patients with compassion and respect. He encouraged me to keep learning, challenged me to grow professionally, and played a significant role in shaping the knowledge and skills I have today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received came from Dr. Clive. He told me that when I scan a patient, I am essentially creating a book for the physician to read. If I do not provide clear, thorough images, the physician cannot accurately interpret the story. That advice has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to guide my work, especially when scanning difficult cases. It reminds me of the importance of attention to detail and producing the highest-quality images possible.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering this field to work collaboratively with their teams, support one another, and always strive to maintain the highest standards of patient care. Success is built on teamwork, mutual respect, and a willingness to help others grow. By supporting your colleagues and sharing knowledge, everyone benefits—including the patients we serve.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest opportunities in this field is the potential for continuous growth and learning. There are numerous certifications, registries, and imaging modalities that allow professionals to expand their expertise and advance their careers. One of the ongoing challenges, however, is maintaining a positive and motivated team environment. Supporting one another, fostering engagement, and encouraging professional development are essential to overcoming that challenge and delivering exceptional patient care.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, integrity, and treating others with respect are the values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe in always doing the right thing, even when it is difficult. As a Christian, I strive to treat others the way I would want to be treated—with kindness, compassion, and understanding. These principles influence how I interact with patients, colleagues, and the people in my everyday life.
