About Mieko
Mieko Taliaferro owns and operates Pathway to Success, a therapeutic group home located in Petersburg, Virginia, just outside Richmond. The home, which she launched after a lengthy licensing process that concluded in December 2024, provides services to boys with mental health and behavioral health concerns. Her career path began with an undergraduate degree in education, followed by three years as a classroom teacher and four years as a school counselor. She then transitioned into campus recruiting for global companies while continuing part-time mental health work as a qualified mental health professional with youth. This combination of experiences in education and mental health ultimately led her to entrepreneurship in the therapeutic group home sector, where she has now been involved full-time for nearly two years after 13 years in the broader field. In addition to her primary business, Taliaferro is the chief of staff and a board member of the nonprofit Forever Girlfriends RVA, where she focuses on volunteerism and community service initiatives such as back-to-school drives. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated and has recently launched a consulting company to assist other professionals starting mental health businesses in Virginia.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't be afraid to take risks. If you are wanting to be an entrepreneur, the biggest risk that you can take is actually not taking a risk. Just don't be afraid to go against the grain and to create your own path. Everybody may not understand what it is that you're trying to do or see your vision, but just stay the course. Do the work, it'll definitely work out in your favor.
