Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mikaela

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having really great mentors along the way who encouraged me, showed me the ropes, and helped me navigate the healthcare field successfully.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received is don't give up. In spite of negativity, challenges, or criticisms, take the feedback, keep pushing forward, continue to grow, and never throw in the towel.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay connected and find a circle of other women who can encourage you, uplift you during tough days, and inspire you. Don't silo yourself or seclude yourself from your network. Surround yourself with people who motivate you and speak life into you, because it's a tough field and can feel lonely, especially in leadership.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is the lack of healthcare workers and leaders at higher levels who look like me as an African American female in a predominantly male and white field. Additionally, in mental health there is not a lot of funding, creating barriers for underserved populations who need access to care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is the highest value for me. I make sure I am fair and consistent with my employees and in my personal life. Respect also matters the most to me.
