Her Story
About Milena
Milena Garcia is an adult education leader and instructor with 23 years of experience. Originally from Colombia, she arrived in the United States with zero English. She holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in business administration and human resources from Colombia. These credentials were confirmed by an equivalency letter from the Foreign Credential Services of America in Austin, which she obtained in 2002 or 2003. Although she initially pursued business administration at her father's encouragement, her passion has always been teaching. She has played every role in her adult education program and now serves as its coordinator in San Antonio, Texas. Milena is a board member of TALE, the Texas Adult Education Learner Organizations, and a member of COABE, the national organization for adult educators. In April 2025, she was a keynote speaker for the National Conference of Adult Education Teachers. She attributes her success to her parents' education and advice, as well as her own perseverance and determination.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Milena
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success first to my parents for their education and advice, and also to my perseverance and determination in life. Coming from Colombia where teachers don't make much money, my dad encouraged a different path initially, but I followed my passion for teaching upon arriving in the US.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My first teacher, who is still my friend and mentor, told me 23 years ago that she saw a lot of potential in me and that I have to believe in myself and ignore bad attitudes and comments from people when learning English. She empowered me and made me confident.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Raising a family is important but we cannot forget about our own goals and dreams. As Latin women, we tend to sacrifice our time and goals for family, but you can do both in parallel. Don't forget about your own goals, find balance, and don't waste time.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is the immigration situation and funding this year. New requirements from the federal government make it hard to enroll students who meet all the requirements.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect is number one - to be respectful in anything you do. Also loyalty, determination when accomplishing goals, and integrity to be a good human being.
