Her Story
About Miranda
Miranda Martin is a dedicated mental health professional, public educator, and community advocate with more than 15 years of experience in human services. Currently serving as a LIFE Counselor at Roanoke County Public Schools in Virginia, she specializes in youth mental health, trauma-informed care, holistic wellness, and prevention education. Her career began in education, where she spent 11 years as a classroom teacher before transitioning into school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, case management, and clinical mental health services. Through her work, Miranda supports children and adolescents in developing emotional awareness, healthy coping strategies, and greater independence. She integrates mindfulness, sensory-based interventions, and therapeutic practices into her approach, drawing on her clinical expertise and certification as a yoga instructor.
Miranda holds a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Rehabilitation Counseling and additional certification in behavioral and substance addictions from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She also completed a post-master's certification in School Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her professional accomplishments include receiving grants from the Montgomery County Education Foundation and the Virginia Counseling Association Foundation in 2025. Among her most notable achievements was securing funding to establish a sensory-based stress center at a Title I school in Montgomery County, transforming an underutilized storage space into a therapeutic environment equipped with yoga areas, hammocks, and sensory resources. In addition to her clinical and educational work, Miranda founded INSPIRE, a youth enrichment nonprofit in North Carolina, and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Beyond her professional achievements, Miranda's commitment to mental health advocacy is deeply influenced by her personal experiences with trauma, grief, and healing, including the devastating loss of her daughter to domestic violence. She has transformed these challenges into a meaningful purpose, using her experiences to help young people and families navigate adversity and discover pathways toward healing. Guided by authenticity, empathy, self-awareness, and a commitment to helping others, Miranda strives to create supportive environments where individuals can recognize their strengths and reach their full potential. She hopes to continue expanding her community impact, return to her doctoral studies at the University of Mississippi, and write a book that shares her experiences and insights. Outside her professional life, she enjoys reading, practicing yoga, traveling, and exploring cultural arts.

Ten minutes with Miranda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to finding purpose and meaning in the hardships I have experienced. By turning trauma into triumph, I strive to transform difficult experiences into opportunities to help, inspire, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received came from mentors who recognized my potential and encouraged me to pursue greater opportunities. Their guidance taught me the importance of believing in myself, embracing growth, and recognizing possibilities I may not see on my own. These experiences have shown me how powerful mentorship can be in building confidence and achieving success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women to find a mentor while continuing to discover who they are and what they want to achieve. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own; there are people who have already walked the path you’re pursuing and are willing to share their knowledge, experience, and guidance to help you succeed.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is earning professional respect and recognition while navigating cultural differences and perceptions about my background. In youth mental health, there is also a need for more accessible services, early intervention, and supportive school environments. However, I see significant opportunities in holistic wellness, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, and sensory-based practices. I’m passionate about creating meaningful programs that support children’s emotional well-being and using available resources creatively to make a positive impact in my community.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are self-awareness, authenticity, empathy, and selflessness. I believe in understanding myself, staying true to who I am, and approaching others with compassion and understanding. I strive to lead with empathy, serve others wholeheartedly, and make a positive difference in the lives of those around me.
