About Mitra

Mitra Abbasi is a Research and Development Engineer in Materials Science and Manufacturing Engineering, working for an oil and gas company in Texas. Since earning her bachelor's degree in materials science in 2013, she has focused on drilling services, developing novel materials and new manufacturing strategies for producing dilbit and advanced materials that deliver better performance, higher durability, and higher efficiency for drilling oil wells. She earned her PhD in materials science in 2018 and a manufacturing master's degree between 2021 and 2022. Abbasi is a member of SPE, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and an American manufacturing organization, where she has participated in conferences and technology discussions. Her work involves research projects aimed at game-changing advancements in the industry, including patents and improved coatings for oil piping systems with higher thermal conductivity.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just try to be independent, not only financially but also personality. Have an independent personality and have goals. Study hard but not only study. Take time for being happy and give different skills like communication and networking. Education is important but also social skills.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Finding challenges and solutions in projects. Opportunity to join professional groups for discussion and sharing experiences with people from different fields. In Texas, opportunity to hang out with different people but not exactly same level. Wish for more professional activities for fun, sharing experience and opinions.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Using knowledge and skills to make people's lives easier, achieve better products with more durability to help oil field workers. Save money to support some people. Social status, respect from people, feeling like a valuable person in society.
