Her Interview

Ten minutes with Molly

01What do you attribute your success to?

I am a very hard worker and consistent. I wake up every day and have a plan for what I know I want to accomplish and try to see things through. I try to make sure that tasks are reasonable and find the steps to make that happen. Perseverance and not getting discouraged by setbacks, especially in higher education while pursuing a doctorate.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is from my dad, who has since passed, but it is that you can do anything you want if you want to do it, and don't have anyone say that you can't do it. Along the way, it's important to encourage others to do what they were meant to do. If you have a calling or passion, pursue it wholeheartedly and don't wait because it is so worth it to fulfill your vocational goals and make a difference in other people's lives, especially when investing in students.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get a bachelor's degree in a helping profession and maybe volunteer with a community that has behavioral health needs to see if they like it. Then pursue a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling at a CACREP accredited institution, pursue licensure in their state, and if they want to enter supervision or education, find a counselor education supervision doctoral program.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the rate of burnout in mental health professionals. This also creates an opportunity in counselor education to have agency to help shape these counselors so that they can emerge into the field feeling ready and equipped to do their job, energized, and thriving, not just surviving.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity - doing what you say, maintaining commitments, staying true to what's important including as a mom, professor and counselor. Curiosity - always remain curious and try not to make opinions or judgments too soon. Faith - it guides what I do, I consider my work a calling and it has a purpose. I work at a Christian institution and received my degrees at Christian institutions.
