About Molly

Molly West serves as a family nurse practitioner in Rockport, Texas, where she focuses on family medicine across all age groups through her primary role and her own business. With 15 years as a nurse practitioner, she began her career after transitioning from adventure education and therapy, working in various settings including nursing homes, hospitals, home care, and inpatient pediatric and adult care before advancing to her current position. She earned an associate's degree in nursing, a bachelor's degree, and a master's degree, and at one point held 11 different certifications. West founded Roaming Roots Health at roamingrootshealth.com to offer concierge services, visiting patients at home, motivated by her desire to avoid exposing her own children to waiting rooms. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and volunteers with Ducks Unlimited for conservation and assists with the Good Samaritan program to feed those in need. West emphasizes values of equality and basic respect for all, has high patient satisfaction rates, and credits her success to hard work along with support from her husband and parents. She advises not letting the job consume one's life and encourages young women in nursing to pursue continuing education and flexible paths.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Molly

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from hard work and incredible support from my husband and parents. They encouraged me to pursue my goals even when my grades weren't the best, giving me the confidence to build my career and start my own business.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't let the job consume you. Walk away at the end of the day and take your vacations. A retiring doctor told me to treat it like any other job - set down your tools and walk away.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep growing through continuing education and pursue whatever brings you joy. Nursing has so many avenues for success and flexibility - you don't have to stay in a hospital, there are so many options and you can really do whatever you want with the degree.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Time management with a busy schedule and family. Access issues for patients in rural communities due to lack of health insurance, cost, and transportation. Stigma from some physicians undervaluing nurse practitioners despite doing the same work.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Everybody is equal and deserves basic respect and humanity regardless of title or degree. I make sure patients and my children understand this by having them call me by my first name and treating everyone the same.
