Her Story

About Mona

Mona Ahuja is a Yoga and Pilates instructor based in Los Altos, California. With more than 20 years of yoga practice and decades of experience in dance and movement instruction, she teaches yoga, Reformer Pilates, and mindfulness at multiple venues, including an Episcopal church, her studio, and as a yoga electives teacher at a private high school in East Palo Alto, where she is in her fifth year. Ahuja is Yoga Alliance certified, holds a deep stretch coach certification through Yoga Body, and is Reformer certified through Balanced Body. She specializes in yoga, Reformer Pilates, dance, and mindfulness, emphasizing the internal and mindful aspects of these practices over purely fitness-oriented approaches often portrayed in social media. In addition to her professional work, Ahuja volunteers with a local women's and children's organization providing support for domestic abuse survivors and has offered yoga sessions to the boys' varsity basketball team at her local high school for six years. She advises aspiring instructors to obtain certification to deepen their personal practice, gain experience teaching diverse groups while staying true to themselves, and build confidence through hands-on work without being swayed by franchise trends.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get certified even if not planning to teach full-time as it deepens personal practice. Teach various classes to gain experience with different people and body types but stay true to yourself. Build confidence through experience and don't get caught up in the glitz of franchises. Your voice is powerful and valuable.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Social media portrays yoga as just another fitness class, leading people to think they need to be flexible or sweat, missing the internal, mindful aspects. Challenge is helping people understand yoga's deeper value beyond outward appearance or fast-paced classes.
