About Monalisa
Monalisa Chandra serves as Assistant Professor of Health at the University of Houston, having officially begun her role in September. She brings more than 10 to 15 years of experience in public health research to the position. Chandra earned her PhD in behavioral science and previously worked as a postdoctoral fellow at a cancer center. Earlier in her career, she lectured in the Department of Sociology at the University of Houston for more than six years. Her research centers on cancer studies and women's health. Outside academia, Chandra led the Indian American Cancer Network, a nonprofit providing cancer support, for several years and has volunteered with the American Cancer Society. She emphasizes the importance of hard work, focus, passion for research and teaching, and an altruistic approach in higher education.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Work hard, stay focused on your priorities and vision, be passionate about research and teaching, and love what you do. It is a competitive and merit-focused industry that requires an altruistic perspective.
