Her Story

About Monet

Monet Mclendon is a therapist and social worker based in Detroit, Michigan. She has been in her field for about 15 years, beginning her career working with the senior population in group home and social work settings for 10 to 12 years. She later transitioned to a hospice company where she focused on counseling the bereaved, which sparked her passion for community work and education to reduce the stigma around therapy. Monet holds a master's degree in social work with an aging concentration and a full clinical license. She is a community advocator who provides individualized therapy while also targeting broader populations through initiatives like her bi-weekly summer Therapy Walks with Monet McLendon events featuring sound bowl therapy and yoga. She serves as clinical co-director for DABO Detroit and is a member of the Order of Eastern Stars, where community service and sisterhood is the primary mission. Monet attributes her success to her passion, rooted in a childhood desire to make a difference in chaotic environments by using her voice. She values honesty, integrity, consistency, and discipline, and advises young women to follow their heart, not give up, push beyond the basics, and put themselves first. She was recently selected to be featured as one of the influential women for 2026.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Monet

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to passion. A lot of this comes from me being a little girl in an environment that I consider to be chaos and wanted to just make a difference by utilizing my voice and that passion.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Mistakes doesn’t define you, being teachable, open minded, and willing to take risk, even after failure makes you the greatest!

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Follow your heart. Don't give up. Push yourself beyond the basics. And put yourself first.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is work-life balance. I find myself carrying guilt when I'm unable to show up for events knowing that people need the support. Understanding that sometimes things are out of my control and I can't be everything to everybody always. It takes time and a village.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, integrity, consistency, and discipline.
