Her Story

About Monica

I started in the federal government but always wanted to be an entrepreneur with a love for hair, so I opened a salon using a car loan for the lease deposit despite no prior salon experience. I learned through trial and error, hired from hair schools, and gave back by offering free services to women in difficult situations for on-the-job training. Three years ago I moved from behind the chair to solely own and scale the business while coaching others and creating content. I completed Goldman Sachs and aim to launch a global hair product line connected through DC embassies.

Ten minutes with Monica

01What do you attribute your success to?

The ability to learn how to delegate. So many business owners try to do everything on their own, but you can go so much further if you know how to properly delegate and not take everything on your plate.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do what you're passionate about with all of your passion. Stay focused on what it is that you are passionate about even if it doesn't look like you can make it happen to other people. Just believe, if you're passionate about it, and you know you can make it happen, stick with it.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family, solid friendships where we support each other, and education because we should always be learning and expanding our minds.
