Her Story

About Monica

Monica Gonzalez is an accomplished soccer broadcaster, coach, nonprofit executive, and former international soccer player whose career has been defined by leadership, service, and a commitment to expanding opportunities through sport. She began her professional soccer career with the Mexico Women's National Team in 1998 while attending the University of Notre Dame, where she balanced the demands of elite international competition with her academic pursuits. Over the course of her distinguished playing career, she represented Mexico at the Olympic Games and the FIFA Women's World Cup before retiring from professional competition in 2011. Following her retirement, Gonzalez successfully transitioned into sports broadcasting, establishing herself as a respected bilingual studio analyst and field reporter, including extensive coverage for ESPN while based in Mexico City. Her ability to seamlessly evolve from elite athlete to media professional reflects her adaptability, expertise, and enduring passion for the game.

Driven by a desire to create opportunities beyond the field, Gonzalez co-founded the Gonzo Soccer & Leadership Academy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing organized soccer programs, leadership development, and life-skills education to underserved communities. Under her leadership, the organization has expanded to 17 cities across the United States, Mexico, and Colombia, empowering thousands of young people through sustainable coaching programs, community partnerships, and curriculum focused on confidence, discipline, teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. She believes that sports are far more than competition—they are powerful vehicles for education, social change, and breaking cycles of poverty by giving children the skills and opportunities needed to succeed in every aspect of life.

Today, Gonzalez continues to make a meaningful impact as an elementary school coach in the Venice, California area, where she uses sports to teach character, leadership, and essential life skills to the next generation. She attributes her success to the discipline, perseverance, resilience, and teamwork that soccer instilled in her from an early age. Passionate about equity and inclusion, she advocates for making organized sports accessible to every child, regardless of financial circumstances, believing that athletics can build confidence, inspire purpose, and transform communities. Through her work in broadcasting, nonprofit leadership, education, and youth development, Gonzalez has established herself as an influential leader dedicated to empowering others and creating lasting positive change through sport.

Ten minutes with Monica

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the values that soccer instilled in me from an early age—discipline, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to embrace new opportunities, even when the path was uncertain. Representing Mexico on the Women's National Team, competing in the Olympic Games and FIFA Women's World Cup, and later transitioning into a broadcasting career with ESPN taught me that setbacks often lead to unexpected opportunities for growth. Those experiences inspired me to use my platform beyond competition by founding a nonprofit that brings organized soccer, life-skills education, and sustainable coaching programs to underserved communities across multiple countries. Whether through broadcasting, community outreach, or coaching young athletes, I measure success by the positive impact I can make in the lives of others, helping them build confidence, create opportunities, and realize their full potential.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge and at the same time the greatest opportunity in my field is ensuring that sports are truly accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances or where they live. I believe athletics should be more than competition; they should serve as a platform for teaching life skills such as confidence, discipline, teamwork, resilience, and self-esteem. By expanding organized sports programs into underserved and remote communities, investing in coach development, and building sustainable nonprofit initiatives, we can create lasting opportunities for young people. I also see tremendous potential in using sports to help break cycles of poverty by empowering children with the skills, purpose, and confidence they need to succeed both on and off the field. Additionally, as the industry continues to evolve, professional transitions from playing to broadcasting, coaching, or community leadership—create new opportunities for athletes to extend their impact and inspire future generations.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my work and personal life are perseverance, adaptability, service, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others. Throughout my journey from competing as a professional soccer player to transitioning into broadcasting, nonprofit leadership, coaching, and education I have learned that growth comes through resilience, consistency, and a willingness to embrace change. Sports have always represented far more than winning; they have taught me the importance of discipline, self-reflection, and continuous improvement. Above all, I believe every child deserves access to the life-changing benefits of sports, regardless of financial circumstances. I am passionate about removing barriers, empowering young people to realize their potential, and using sport as a vehicle to build confidence, character, and stronger communities.
