About Monica

I've been in education for 9 years, and my journey has been driven by a deep calling to be for students what educators were for me when I was a child. I originally set out to pursue criminal justice, but I felt this passion to give back in the way teachers had supported me. I started teaching an intervention reading class to students who were significantly lower than their grade level, and I absolutely loved it. From there, I moved up to 8th grade, teaching both 8th grade reading and GT students. I felt a calling for leadership and served as an assistant principal and principal in residence for a few years before shifting to school counseling and mental health, where I've been ever since. In my current role, which I transitioned to last year, I serve as a coordinator-level leader of the counseling department at Trinity Basin. I oversee roughly 12 schools, from elementary all the way to our high school campus. I coach and support our counselors, and in cases where there's a severe crisis, I go in and assist with that crisis response to help them through those situations. I'm also building a comprehensive school counseling program for the entire district to better align with the role of a school counselor and what the state requires. One of my most notable achievements has been reaching these leadership capacities at such a young age - I started as an assistant principal in my mid to late 20s - and being able to make a lasting impression on other leaders, teachers, and counselors, even when some of them are older than me.
