Her Story
About Monique
I've been in music since I was young, starting to sing when I was a child. I always did other jobs alongside music - I ran a boutique law firm for about four and a half years, and I was a personal assistant in Beverly Hills for about 4 years. But I was always singing. Since moving to Vegas about four and a half years ago, things have been taken to a whole new level for me. The show I do right now is a tribute show to Connie Francis, and I actually met her before she passed away. She gave me her full endorsement and approval, and was advising me for a little bit. I'm still working with people in her camp. It's really been quite a blessing and quite surprising - I never expected to be doing something like this, but it gives me a lot of joy, and it gives others a lot of joy. I get to connect with people on a really amazing level and speak into their lives. I do a lot with the veterans, because Connie was really about veterans. She suffered from PTSD herself and did a lot to start support groups for people that suffer with mental illness. I also produce a show called Tea Talk that I post online, and I'm in the middle of writing a book based on that series. I produce my own shows and usually do one-woman shows. My ability to connect with people is what I consider my greatest achievement - it's a God gift that starts with my voice, with singing, and then opens a doorway that gives me the ability to speak into people's lives in a way that maybe other people haven't been able to reach them. I'm a storyteller, and I've always looked at my presence on stage as not being about me, but about connecting with people and giving them an experience that leaves them better off than when they came in.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my ability to connect with people, which is totally a God gift. It starts with my voice, with singing, and then it opens a doorway and gives me the ability to speak into people's lives in a way that maybe other people haven't been able to reach them. I'm a storyteller, and the comment I get most when I'm on stage from audience members after speaking is 'you had us the moment you walked out.' I have always looked at my presence on stage as not being about me, but about connecting with people and giving them an experience that leaves them better off than when they came in. I touch lives in a positive way. I've been fostering a really close relationship with God since I was very small, and honestly, my main mentor is really God - it's my belief system, it's God, it's Holy Spirit, and it's Jesus Christ. That's what drives me. I have such a tremendous call on my life, and that's what drives me. I love my lane, and I do things to foster and gird up the sides of my lane. I was really about building a reputation of somebody that you can respect and depend upon, and by the grace of God, it's happened.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to start with a very strong foundation, and that foundation is knowing who you are. I tell them to go to God and ask, 'Who do you say that I am?' And when He answers, ask Him to show you what that looks like and how to live up to that. You've got to have a strong foundation of who you are, and that doesn't mean you don't allow yourself to be taught. Humility plays a huge role - you have to be teachable. Being grateful is a huge part of that. You have to recognize that you are you, and to try and compare yourself to other people just takes you down a rabbit hole, because you won't be that person. That person is that person. What they do is what they do. I teach them about setting goals - how to make big goals and achieve those big goals by making little goals. It's really about having a strong foundation so that as you grow in your field, you hopefully develop the character to be able to handle what's coming at you. That's what happened to me.
