Her Story

About Nahid

I have been an artist all my life. I specialized in doing etchings, which I started in the early 1970s at New York University. I was the first woman to introduce etchings and printmaking to Iranian people, and I had exhibitions in Iran during the 1970s. My etchings are in museums and private collections, and I am very well known in that area. For a very short while, I worked on my own as a textile designer, but the rest of the time I have just done my artwork. I have had many group shows and many single shows, with my latest exhibition being last year in LA. Now I do paintings and drawings. People come to my studio or connect through galleries to purchase my work. I do not do custom work. I paint all day, and through working every day, new things develop. Inspiration comes from my previous works, and I create different, new pieces. One work leads to another.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my own perseverance and my own working, my own experience, and following my heart. Everything I've learned comes from my experience. Nobody can tell me or tell anyone else how to do this. I'm learning every day from what I do. It's about being true to myself and continuing to work.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't go to this industry. It's not an easy life. If you want to sacrifice yourself completely, you could be an artist. Otherwise, don't bother. You need a lot of sacrifices, a lot of working, hard working. And nothing comes overnight for you. And if you have all of these, you follow it. Otherwise, just don't bother. There are so many bad horses around that they just want to be an artist, and that doesn't make it.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

To be true to myself.
