Her Story

About Naima

Naima GarrettScott is the leader of a nonprofit consulting organization based in Metro Atlanta, Georgia. The organization's core mission centers on bridging how communities thrive with how businesses and organizations within those communities operate as stakeholders and stewards. This work includes engaging schools, community members directly, and facilitating multiple businesses working together to address unmet needs, bringing conversations to the table to drive action. As a long-time public servant and community member, Naima applies her perspective to create systems-level solutions for neighborhoods. She attributes her drive and success to stubbornness, remaining resistant to hearing no and viewing obstacles as tests or opportunities to develop new skills rather than stopping points. Naima advises young women entering the field not to give in to fear, instead seeking small wins that build toward larger achievements and greater confidence.

Ten minutes with Naima

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my drive and success to stubbornness. I have always been resistant to hearing no and instead take obstacles as suggestions or tests. I view challenges as opportunities to flex different skill sets or strengthen new muscles rather than stopping points. I re-map things, rest if needed, or pull in allies, but stopping is never an option. The world needs stubborn women who are not afraid to ruffle feathers and break glass in the best possible way.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to not give in to the fear because it will always be there. Look for ways to win, even the smallest steps toward your goal. Small wins are so important because they turn into big wins. Big wins are made of smaller wins. Keep going, accomplish one small win then look for another, and before you know it you will have put together a big win and built your own confidence.
